Jacobsen Tree Experts, Inc. has maintained a standard of excellence since 1961. What began as a small, family-run operation has grown into a trusted tree care company serving residential, commercial, and utility clients across the Midwest — and beyond.
Today, we employ 21 skilled professionals and provide quality tree services throughout Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa, along with nationwide disaster response services.

Growing in our community for over 60 years
Built on generations of experience, Jacobsen Tree Experts has grown alongside the communities we serve. Our history reflects a commitment to quality, safety, and steady growth since day one.
Our Roots
A Family Business Built from the Ground Up
1961 marks the beginning of our story, when Garold “Jake” Jacobsen founded Jacobsens Tree Service, focusing primarily on municipalities in central Minnesota. As the business grew, the company name was passed down to his eldest son, while Jake went on to form Jacobsen Line Clearing.
Bill Jacobsen, the youngest son, grew up in the industry — working summers and learning the trade from an early age. After graduating high school, Bill explored other opportunities before ultimately returning to the family business, bringing new perspective and ambition with him.
Leadership & Expansion
Growing with Purpose and Vision
In 1991, Bill and his wife Cathleen took over the company and formed Jacobsen Tree Service, Inc. Bill assumed the role of Owner/Operator, while Cathleen managed the company’s financial operations. Jake remained actively involved, working as a foreman and operator.
Under the leadership of a new, more forward-thinking generation, the company expanded throughout Minnesota in both size and service area. This period of growth laid the groundwork for what would become a defining part of our business.
Expanding Our Reach
Strengthening Our Presence in the Midwest
In January 2000, Bill and Cathleen were approached by a rural electric cooperative to sell a majority interest in the business. This partnership secured the company’s future while allowing the Jacobsen family to continue operating the business as they always had — with added opportunities to expand into South Dakota and Iowa.
In January 2003, Bill and Cathleen personally purchased the Sioux Falls–based company Reliable Tree Service / Wood’s Reliable Tree Service. With its strong local reputation, this acquisition allowed Jacobsen Tree Experts to expand services into a more populated market while maintaining the same high standards.

In January 2006, the original Jacobsen family members and several key employees left Jacobsen Tree Service to once again operate as an independent, owner-run company — officially forming Jacobsen Tree Experts, Inc.
